WWII Derbyshire: RAF Darley Moor - Bulk Aviation Fuel Store (1)
Situated on the former airfield for the bulk storage and distribution of aviation fuel.
History:
Situated on a high plateau, RAF Darley Moor was opened in June 1943 as a satellite airfield (SLG) of nearby RAF Ashbourne, becoming home to No. 42 Operational Training Unit. The purpose of this unit was the conversion of Lysander pilots to fly Blenheims, a role that ended in July 1943 when it began training glider tug pilots for squadrons in No 38 Wing (later No 38 Group). For this role it operated with Armstrong Whitworth Whitleys, and later Albemarles. The unit disbanded on 20 March 1945 when its tasking was transferred to No 81 OTU. Following the war the airfield was in use until 1954 for ordnance servicing and storage.
