Pre-Worboys sign near Newry
Pre-Worboys sign near Newry
An old and very worn signpost at the junction of the Church and Cahpel roads between Meigh and Camlough (see J0422 : Pre-Worboys sign near Newry for a wider view). This is part of the sign, interesting for two reasons: firstly, that the original destinations seem to have been painted over with newer ones but, as the paint has faded, both are now seen (e.g. Forkhill and Castleblayney); secondly, the presence of a C road (C198), 1/2 and 1/4 mile distances, now very uncommon.
Pre-Worboys road signs

These are known as pre-Worboys signs because in 1965 new signs were introduced acting on the recommendations of the Worboys Committee which had been tasked with reviewing the UK's road signage. The new designs have mostly remained in current use with only minor changes.
