This town mansion is probably very late 17th century, although no definite date is known. Its site was previously that of the Black Boy Inn which was known to be here from the mid to late 17th century. In 1685 this was owned by Thomas Castle, the innholder who was also a chandler and burgess. He died in 1690 and the present building was built for his son John (1655-1727), a prominent and prosperous local physician. The building is Grade II* listed.
