NY9105 : Track above Crook Sike

taken 3 years ago, 5 km NE of West Stonesdale, North Yorkshire, England

Track above Crook Sike
Track above Crook Sike
The estate track up William Gill from the Arkengarthdale road two and a half kilometres below ends here, though a distinct path continues towards the disused William Gill Colliery, abandoned almost a century ago. Crook Sike is the main headwater of William Gill, picking up tributaries and changing name shortly downstream. The green slope on the left is all that can be seen of the bridleway that crosses the Sike, to climb up on the right and continue to the Tan Hill Inn. Most walkers will, like me, have followed the estate road to cross the Sike lower down, despite the loss of thirty metres of height.
