Steam engine "Old Ben"
This was in a courtyard belonging to the old Heriot-Watt University site on Grassmarket and backing on to the Greyfriars graveyard. This engine was reputedly by Walkinshaw, Bridgeton near Glasgow c1790 and had been used in a colliery. It is an unusual engine with guide bars rather than parallel motion. It had obviously led a hard life as can be seen by the repair on the beam. Stopped work at Highhouse Colliery in 1956 and presented by the National Coal Board to Heriot-Watt 11/1957. Removed from there in 1991 and now at Lady Victoria Colliery, Newtongrange.
