Horncastle Farmers' Club, 8 The Market Place, Horncastle
Grade II Listed Posting Inn, dating in the listing to about 1860. Formerly the Queen's Head Inn, existing before 1826 it isn't mentioned in a late 18th century list of inns. Pigot’s 1828 directory includes ‘Queens Head, Mary Hunter & Son, Market place’. However John Wesley reportedly made a speech in a yard supposed to be that of the Queen's Head in 1759; it may just be at a location later to become the Queen's Head yard. By 1875 it had closed despite being rebuilt, presumably to the building we see today, in 1863/4. northamptonshirewalks blog claims that 'early in the 19th century served as barracks for volunteer soldiers'. If this is correct, it must have been the previous building. Other directory entries include, 1856 Samuel Vickers, 1861 William Thomas Copperthwaite (also butcher), 1868-1872 Mrs Elizabeth Tomblin and 1885 I can find no entry for 8 Market Place but by 1889 veterinary surgeon George Thomson is listed here. Again in 1905 I can’t find an entry and in 1913 & 1919 veterinary surgeon Joseph Paterson is listed.
