The sign is carved in English Oak and has a hurdle carved on the upper element which can be seen east of the church beside the danish earthworks represented by the Saxon in a winged helmet and holding a spear. The centre panel shows the church of St Edmund. Within the right panel is depicted the legendary English cricketer, Fuller Pilch (1804–1870) who was born in the village. On the reverse are details of what the sign represents and at the top is a plough, representing the drawing matches which are held in the parish. A pair of scales and a Roman urn which were unearthed in the village in the late 19th century. Link Link
Village Signs of East Anglia

Village signs are typically placed along the principal road or in a prominent location such as a village green or close by the church. The design often depicts a particularly feature of the village or a scene from its history, heritage, or culture. They are typically made of wood or metal or a combination of both, the designs are often made by the local community.
Although they do appear in villages and towns all over the country they are more prominent in East Anglia than elsewhere in the country.
