West Walton village sign
The sign shows West Walton detached church bell tower which dates from the mid 13th century. Below the tower are three small carvings of sheep relating to a mention of several hundred sheep in the Domesday book.
The sign is surmounted by the chequered pattern representing the Coat of Arms of William de Warrenne who was a Standard Bearer to William the Conqueror who was awarded West Walton for services rendered at the Battle of Hastings. Superimposed over the chequered pattern are the Arms of the Repps family who were associated with the village between 1500 and 1660.
Village Signs of East Anglia

Village signs are typically placed along the principal road or in a prominent location such as a village green or close by the church. The design often depicts a particularly feature of the village or a scene from its history, heritage, or culture. They are typically made of wood or metal or a combination of both, the designs are often made by the local community.
Although they do appear in villages and towns all over the country they are more prominent in East Anglia than elsewhere in the country.
