Elephants for freedom
The Buxton monument features some carved panels. This one has several references: Buxton was a very tall young person and was nicknamed 'The Elephant'; he was instrumental in India in stopping the practice of 'suttee' - the custom of burning a widow alive on her husband's funeral pyre; he also pushed for the number of offences in Britain using the death penalty from 230 to 8.
