The Five Weirs Walk at Salmon Pastures
The Five Weirs Walk at Salmon Pastures
The area was named at a time when salmon were abundant in the River Don. Pollution from local industries caused the salmon to disappear in the early 19th century but, following the decline of heavy industry in the area, significant cleaning of the river and the installation of fish passes on the several weirs, the salmon have recently returned to access spawning grounds upstream. This is celebrated by a stsue sited outside Sheffield railway station SK3586 : 'Salmon of Steel'
