British Geological Survey maps show extrusive igneous rock here, part of the Clyde Plateau Volcanic Formation. In this particular area, it is marked as "intermediate lavas of the alkali olivine-basalt series", and is more specifically annotated Wᴹ (for "Mugearite").

Some small flowers, a kind of stonecrop, could be seen growing here and in similar settings nearby: NS2873 : Stonecrop on a rock outcrop.
