Old Railway Bridge Supports near Breich Water
The bridge that used to be here until fairly recently - it is still shown carrying a railway on an OS map printed in 1967 - would have transported shale from the nearby mines and pits to the once sprawling Addiewell Chemical Works. Once there oil and other byproducts were extracted.
The track, while still used by dogwalkers a fair bit, would once have been far busier. It is shown as an actual road on a county map from 1820 and early OS maps. Now it pretty much disappears into a muddy quagmire shortly North of the burn, only becoming path-like again about half-way along the Five Sisters shale bings.
Note the quaint stone bench in a stylish stone semi-circle on the left of the picture - certainly unusual!
