Broch of Gurness

The Broch of Gurness is a remarkable large structure on the northern coast of Mainland Orkney at Aikerness. Dating originally from c. 500BC during the Iron Age, it was however subsequently inhabited, altered and enlarged for many centuries. The central broch itself stands 10' (3m) high and is 63'(21m) in diameter, its walls being over 14' (>4m) thick. Surrounding the broch is a veritable village of structures, the most extensive and well-preserved domestic buildings surrounding any broch to be found anywhere in Scotland.
The Canmore website classifies it as having a Broch (Iron Age), Pictish Symbol Stone (Pictish), Settlement (Viking) and Subterranean Structure (Period Unknown). For a lot more information see their website here LinkExternal link
