Parish church [3]
Parish church [3]
Part of the extensive churchyard.
The magnificent Anglican parish church of The Holy Trinity was rebuilt on the site of an earlier church and incorporates some elements of the earlier building. Erected between circa 1460 and 1497, the church is a very fine example of the late Perpendicular style. The west tower was built in 1903 around an earlier tower of 1772 which was a replacement for the original tower destroyed by lightning in 1710. The Lady Chapel, built separately from the church, is linked to the chancel by single storeyed vestries. The Clopton chapel has a number of very fine 15th and 16th century brasses. The Clopton chantry to the east has the monument to John Clopton, a plain tomb chest of Purbeck marble. In the chancel is the large and elaborate monument to Sir William Cordell. In the nave is a fine, small, bas relief in alabaster of the Adoration of the Magi (dated circa 1350) probably from the earlier church. Listed, grade I, with details at: LinkExternal link
Long Melford is a large village in Suffolk near the border with Essex, some 3 miles north of Sudbury. The village gained its name because it stretches for two and three quarter miles essentially along a single road. There is evidence of occupation from every period from the Mesolithic. The village contains two stately homes, Kentwell Hall and Melford Hall, is home to one of the largest and richest "wool churches" in East Anglia with fine flushwork, and a superb almshouse founded in 1573.
