NT1474 : Fast Spinning Radar Mast

taken 3 years ago, near to Edinburgh Airport, Edinburgh, Scotland

Fast Spinning Radar Mast
Fast Spinning Radar Mast
This is one of a group of three close-together radar masts that serve Edinburgh Airport. It is odd that they lie just outside the airport perimeter, but no doubt there are good reasons for this. I describe it as the fast spinning mast as there is an identical looking one in the group, a short distance West of here that rotates far more slowly. I reckon this one takes a bit over a second to do its sweep while the other one takes four or five seconds.
There is a picture of the same mast from a decade or so ago by another contributor to this square. The top has completely changed, from a sci-fi looking white ball thing to what I can best describe as a giant rotating carpenter's pencil - one of those strange flat pencils only ever seen in Screwfix catalogues and the like!
