HMS Bildeston was a minesweeper using high frequency sonar to search for seabed mines, and as it was equipped with a 40 mm gun, it also had a secondary role as a patrol vessel. Commissioned in 1953, she saw service for the following 33 years throughout the UK and Europe, and was decommissioned in 1986. The aerials on the mast aft of the ship are wide-band UHF bi-conical monopoles (with a counterpoise skirt).

In 1984 the rampant red lion insignia which had been on the funnel, was presented to the Red Lion public house in the ship's namesake village of Bildeston in Suffolk.
