Old guidestone/milestone at Dyson Cote
The hexagonal, gritstone guidestone or stoop at Dyson Cote is dated 1734. The oldest dated stone in N Derbyshire, South and West Yorkshire. It was removed in 1940, stored by a local farmer and replaced in the 1950s. The legends are: Penisstone, Huthersfield & Hallifax/ Woodhead Motram/Underbank Bradfield/Sheffield Rotterham/Barnsley & Pontefract 1734 Doncaster/Wakefield & Leeds. In 1700 the West Riding JPs ordered that 'Stoops to be sett up in Crosse highways'. Over 30 years before action was taken. It has an OS hole in the top. Grade II listed 333837
