Voucher parking in Ayr, May 2000
This May 2000 shot in Wellington Square shows the voucher parking scheme that had been introduced to central Ayr. It proved to be awkward as drivers could find themselves in the last available parking spaces but with no vouchers. Drivers were expected to go to nearby shops to buy vouchers, then return to their vehicles to mark and display the tickets, hoping that the traffic warden didn’t beat them to it. Local people kept some spare vouchers in their cars but visitors could be caught out quite easily. The scheme was replaced by a standard pay-and-display system.
