Houlton is a large residential development built mainly on the site of Rugby Radio Station which closed in 2007. The first residents moved in in December 2017 and, on completion, there will be about 6,200 houses as well as three primary schools, a secondary school, district and local centres, open spaces and wildlife corridors – effectively a small town. A new link road from Rugby was opened in 2009 and there are proposals for a new railway station. Houlton is named after Houlton in Maine, USA where the first ever transatlantic voice broadcast, from Rugby Radio Station in 1927, was received – a rare example of a British settlement named after one in North America. A number of major house builders are involved at Houlton offering two, three, four and five bedroom homes in a variety of styles.
