Top of the T vista - Westbury on Severn, Gloucestershire
A view over the Garden taken from a top arm of the T Canal. On the left the Tall Pavilion and on the right Westbury Parish Church with its detached tower, the scene of a Civil War skirmish on the 7th May 1644. The involvement of the Colchester family with this place began when Duncombe Colchester bought Westbury Court in 1547. Between 1696 and 1705 Maynard Colchester had designed and built this Dutch style water garden, now the only surviving example in Britain. During the late 18th century landscaped gardens and parks became more popular following the appearance of Lancelot 'Capability' Brown on the horticultural stage. During the current pandemic, opening of this National Trust property is restricted - see their website for details. Time photo taken not available.
