A Lone Turbine at Heathfield
Although still absolutely huge when viewed up close, this turbine is noticeably smaller than those in the many nearby windfarms. Its blade tip height is 99 metres and generating capacity a mere 500kW. The blade tip heights of usual turbines round here generally hover around 150 metres and they always seem to generate around 2MW of power.
Wind energy is obviously a massive industry right now and it is always a complicated task to figure out what is actually happening. Due to the fact that planning permission and government approval is always required there is always information available, but it's not usually available in an easily understandable format. The original owners (Muirhall Energy) have sold this solitary turbine, presumably to the English-based company that have received government consent to build a big windfarm around here. The information online is sketchy but the number of turbines proposed seems to be in the teens.
Unusually, and probably because it isn't part of a bigger complex, there is a fully enclosed brick electricity substation directly behind the turbine. The turbine goes under two names at present - Greenwall and Heathland - but the substation is confusingly called Climpy Lodge Turbine!
