At one time Bergh or Beorh and Apton or Apetune were two parishes, each with their own church until Apton church of St Martin was deconsecrated in the 16th century. The two parishes then combined, using Bergh’s church of St Peter and St Paul. Over time the names of the two combined, occasionally into a single word especially on fingerposts. The sign itself is double sided with the pre-conquest on one side and the post-mediaeval on this side. On the ground is a partially unrolled scroll, it is the will of Christopher Tenwinter who bequeathed 60 acres of land to the parish in 1599, on condition that 20 shillings was distributed to the poor annually. His ghostly likeness can be seen under the right side of the tree. In the background, the church of St Peter and St Paul can be seen on the left and a tractor with a 5-share plough is illustrated on the right.

Village Signs of East Anglia

Village signs are typically placed along the principal road or in a prominent location such as a village green or close by the church. The design often depicts a particularly feature of the village or a scene from its history, heritage, or culture. They are typically made of wood or metal or a combination of both, the designs are often made by the local community.
Although they do appear in villages and towns all over the country they are more prominent in East Anglia than elsewhere in the country.
