Northernmost of two Pit Entrances at Harwood Colliery
One of two fenced-off mine entrances inside the seven-turbine ring of Pates Hill Windfarm. The coal must have been transported by road - a short track led from here to processing buildings that used to be located close to where the entrance to the windfarm now is.
Pates Hill was one of the first windfarms round here and is now dwarfed by many of its newer relatives. The seven turbines each generate 2MW, and the turbines have a blade tip height of, by modern standards, a fairly low 107 metres.
The turbines were built by Vestas, a Danish company worth billions, who at the time were the world's leading manufacturer. They have now been overtaken by General Electric and Goldwind, a Chinese company based in the controversial region of Xinjiang, but are still doing pretty well!
