Ruins of Strone Cottage
Ruins of Strone Cottage
This cottage by the Forth and Clyde Canal was described in the 1860 Ordnance Survey name book as 'A neat & superior Cottage belonging to Auchinvole Estate, the property of W. Wallace Esqr of "Auchinvole".'

The name 'Strone' would seem to derive from the Gaelic word 'sron', meaning 'nose', as this word often appears in Scottish place names with regard to a shoulder or spur running off a hillside, such as the one which runs north off Bar Hill above.
