Debenhams, Eldon Square Shopping Centre, Newcastle upon Tyne
The street facing frontage of the Debenhams department store which occupies a large multi-floor space at the southern end of the Eldon Square shopping centre. The department store chain had recently gone into administration and its stores were in the process of selling off stock before permanent closure of the business.
Newcastle's 'new' co-op was built on Newgate Street in 1932. Although 'art decor' in style, it gave more than a nod to Egypt where Howard Carter's discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb had just taken place. See http://www.timmonet.co.uk/html/newcastle_co-op.htm
