Shops on Low Friar Street, Newcastle upon Tyne
A variety of public facing businesses including shops and a massage parlour occupy the ground floors of the buildings on Low Friar Street. This photo was taken during the last week of restrictions imposed by the government during the COVID-19 outbreak that meant non-essential retail stores were unable to open. These restrictions would be lifted (not for the first time) on the 12th of April.
Newcastle's 'new' co-op was built on Newgate Street in 1932. Although 'art decor' in style, it gave more than a nod to Egypt where Howard Carter's discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb had just taken place. See http://www.timmonet.co.uk/html/newcastle_co-op.htm
