Micker Brook
I found myself here after tracking down my surname, Depledge, to Depleach in Cheadle, referring to a deep (=low-lying) leach (boggy stream).
But why Micker? A bit of nosing around in online dictionaries with a tolerance for approximate spelling threw up Norwegian ‘mekre’, German ‘meckern’, Irish ‘meigiodaigh’, Hungarian ‘mekeg’ (that’s enough--Ed.) probably from an Indo-European root mek-, meaning the bleating of a goat. Now Gatley comes from goat cliff, so I reckon that makes a pretty good story. No documentary evidence, of course.
And what’s a 15-km brook doing with five names from source to confluence, anyway?
