Princess Trees in St Peter's Square
As part of the redevelopment of St Peter’s Square in 2015, a number of large trees were planted between the new Metrolink platforms and the Central Library. The trees chosen were Pauwlonias (Paulownia tomentosa) also known as princess trees, empress trees, or Foxglove Trees (see SJ8397 : Pawlonia Tree Blossom).

The Paulownia is a deciduous tree which is native to central and western China. The Fragrant, light lilac-purple flowers provide a stunning display in late April/early May before the leaves appear.
