So called as the beach it flows into is full of cockle shells.
The picture was taken close to the footbridge on a track through the Dalmeny Estate which is part of the John Muir Way walking route that goes from Dunbar to Helensburgh. Waymarked long distance paths seem to be quite the thing these days and this one is fairly new. It used to be a far shorter route situated solely in East Lothian, but was expanded in 2014, and is now a 130-mile coast-to-coast walk. John Muir was born in Dunbar but emigrated to America with his family when a child. They sailed from Helensburgh, which must be the thinking behind the rather contrived route!
Amongst many other things he, interestingly, helped found the US Park Ranger Service and there is a John Muir Trail in the mountains of California. He always has a wild impressive beard in his photographs!
