Captain Cook's Haven, Whitby
Captain Cook's Haven, Whitby
Captain Cook's Haven is a small development of holiday cottages on the bank of the River Esk, on the outskirts of Whitby.

The Larpool Viaduct stands in the background. It was built to carry a railway line into Whitby from Scarborough. The railway closed in 1965, but the viaduct now carries the Cinder Track, a walking and cycling route which follows the former railway route. The viaduct is Grade II listed.
Larpool Viaduct, Whitby

Larpool Viaduct was built in 1882-84 for the Scarborough to Whitby railway, the last rail services being in 1965. It is now an essential link on Sustrans' National Cycle Route 1. It is of brick, crossing the River Esk and the road and railway either side on 13 arches. Its 'claim to fame' is being mentioned incidentally in 'Dracula'.
