Bedlams Bank
A small area of woodland in an elongated hollow, presumably dug out as part of the operation of the Chaldon Firestone Mine. This was one of the main sources of Reigate Stone, a calcareous sandstone that was the primary building material for many key medieval buildings, including the Tower of London, Westminster Abbey, the old St Paul's Cathedral, Windsor Castle and Canterbury Cathedral as well as many churches, with the mine here being in use since at least the 11th Century. Access to the former mine workings is understandably severely restricted - the entrance shaft, with a locked hatch and camera monitoring, can be seen on the opposite side of the hollow.
