Uses for this featureless area suggested in recent years have been: opencast coal mining, a wind farm or military training. It remains a sheepwalk although there is some peat extraction going on nearby.
The wetness of the land means that if they do build a wind power station then there will have to be very deep foundations for both the turbines and all the infrastructure.
Interesting to see that they have so much faith in the reliability of the wind that they have used a solar panel to power the instrumentation! But I am sure that it will make lots of money for some overseas investors.
