Astley Castle south front
The new building inserted into the ruins in 2013 can be seen clearly. The architects were the London firm of Witherford Watson Mann. The president of RIBA, Stephen Hodder, who led the judging panel that awarded them the 2013 Stirling Prize for this building, described it as an 'extreme retrofit' which was an ‘exceptional example of how modern architecture can revive an ancient monument’ and which sent out a strong message about ‘how to engage with existing buildings’.
