St Mary's Parish Church in Ladykirk Berwickshire
The original name of this church was Our Lady Kirk of Steill. It was built about 1500 at the request of James IV of Scotland after he was saved from drowning in the nearby River Tweed. After returning from a siege of Norham Castle on the English side, a flash flood swept James from his horse and into a deep pool known as a 'steill' which was used to net salmon. Luckily he was hauled from the pool before drowning. He attributed his survival to the Virgin Mary. So in gratitude he had the church built facing Norham and the Royal Treasury footed the bill.
