Limestone pavement in Great Asby Scar NNR
The whole of the limestone-paved area is within the Great Asby Scar National Nature Reserve, which is also CROW Access Land, so various paths have developed which are not defined on the OS map. The destination of the one which we are following is Castle Folds Settlement, an ancient monument with scattered remains of wall which lies on the little scar to the right of the photograph. From there a route descends, passing a cairn and heading left to a gate through the wall which descends the hill on the left of the photograph, from where the sloping pavement can be crossed to regain the public bridleway. The sunlit eminence in the middle distance is Linglow Hill, which lies beyond the minor road from Gaythorne to Great Asby.
