Limestone pavement in Great Asby Scar NNR
The Limestone strata of Great Asby Scar are gently folded by a series of NNE-SSW-trending anticlines and synclines. This stretch of pavement is in the NW-dipping limb of one such anticline, whose top lies along the ridge on the right of the photo. This is part of the Knipe Scar Limestone Formation in the Great Scar Limestone Group, of Asbian age (part of the Dinantian of the Lower Carboniferous). East of this the pavement is more broken up (and makes for quite hard walking, as there is some shillow with ankle-twisting potential) whilst once the syncline to the west is reached, there's less limestone and more vegetation which is less risky (there's also a public bridleway, which helps if it has the same destination as yourself). This particular bit of pavement, being generally solid, is fairly easy to traverse.
