The West Cam Road is a Byway Open to All Traffic, and is actually shown as a yellow road on the 1:25000 map at this point. There was no motor traffic when I walked the Pennine Way back in 1974, but today, on the first weekend as Coronavirus lockdown eases, it was busy with motorbikes, quad bikes and the odd four-wheel drive car which was a bit of a shock for socially-distancing walkers. The Pennine Way soon diverges from the byway to the right, taking a quieter way down to Gayle and Hawes whilst the byway drops left into the valley to meet the main road a kilometre west of Hawes.
