Jervaulx Abbey was one of a number of great Cistercian Abbeys in Yorkshire, founded in 1156. At its Medieval zenith the Abbey was renowned for breeding horses, a tradition that continues at nearby Middleham today. It was dissolved in 1537 and has been in private ownership since. The romantic ruins are open to the public LinkExternal link
