New Quay Road elevation of HSBC Bank, 4 Baxtergate, Whitby
Grade II Listed bank and commercial development, 1892, by Walter Brierley for the York City and County Bank. This banking company was taken over by the Midland Bank in 1918, which was subsumed into HSBC in the later 20th century. The Bank built 3-7 Baxtergate to include 3 shops but by 1974 had expanded into the two shops next to it with the shop fronts replaced in stonework in 1977. Building work was completed in 1905 with No.7. One of the two shops taken by the bank returned to a retail outlet around 2016-17. The bank had replaced the Temperance Hall that had been built in 1840 after a Mr Chapman’s sail-loft had been demolished. Mill's Café opened in No.7 in 1928. In decline and passing through a number of owners in the 21st century, in 2014 it was renamed “Harbour View”. Under new ownership in 2018, in 2019 the name was changed to "Hetty & Betty" and in 2021 was a finalists for the High Street Hero award, sponsored by TSB.
