NS5523 : Martha's Brig

taken 3 years ago, near to Auchinleck, East Ayrshire, Scotland

Martha's Brig
Martha's Brig
Martha's Brig in the foreground, and the road stretching away into the distance is where two Churchill tanks became bogged down in the peat, one on each side of the road, blocking the road completely, in 1942. The forest plantations on each side of the road were not there in those days. The tanks were stuck in the peat, up to their turrets, for a few days, until a recovery team got them out. The tanks belonged to the 48th Battalion of the Royal Tank Regiment, and their names were 'Today' and 'Tomorrow'.
