Hexham: Glovers Place
Hexham: Glovers Place
This part of the town was once the site of Hexham's tanning industry. The fast-flowing waters of two burns were used in the preparation of the hides. Sheepskin gloves called Hexham Tans were popular but cheaper imports saw a decline in manufacture in the 1830s. The house in the centre of the picture is Grade II listed and dates from the late 18th century or the first years of the 19th.
