SE0291 : Old lime kiln west of Castle Bolton

taken 3 years ago, near to Castle Bolton, North Yorkshire, England

Old lime kiln west of Castle Bolton
Old lime kiln west of Castle Bolton
Just below the track that runs westwards from close by the castle car park. I must have walked within 20m of this a dozen times or more and never noticed it. A small kiln with no obvious limestone quarry nearby. One would guess that its main purpose was for the fertilisation of nearby fields. Even pastures based on limestone benefited from 'sweetening'.
