Former Oddfellows Arms, 25 Main Street, Higham on the Hill
The Oddfellows pub has been closed since August 2018. It was built in 1791 or 1799 depending on who you believe and reportedly became a pub in 1874 although probably at that time and as far back as 1870 it was just a beerhouse. Known locally as Oddies it is reported to be the oldest in the village but this seems unlikely. A 1905 photograph shows it as a Phillips & Marriott Ltd establishment. In 2009 Bedford brewer Charles Wells failed to sell the pub at auction. A planning application for "permission for the part demolition/part conversion of former public house to a dwelling house and construction of five dwellings with access and outline permission for the erection of up to 20 dwellings and associated infrastructure" may have been withdrawn as locals are trying to organise a community ownership. A search of directories found the following landlords. 1854-1863 not found, 1870 W Jebbett beer retailer but no address, 1875-1876 Thomas Busby beer retailer but no address, 1880-1895 Mrs Jane Salsbury as beerhouse - Odd Fellows Arms (Kelly's lists Thomas Salisbury in 1881), 1899 Martin Edward (listed elsewhere as beer retailer),1908 only Barley Sheaf and Fox Inn listed, 1912 only Barley Sheaf listed
