Spoutcroft Colliery - Pit no 3?
This ramshackle rusty hut on stilts is a former mining building. Considering how rare it is to find any substantial traces of the mining industry today, there is staggeringly little information available about this mine. Perhaps it isn't old enough to yet warrant historical attention.
On the latest 2015 large-scale OS paper map it simply says 'mine' here, despite it obviously having been out of operation for a considerable length of time. There is a chance it was officially called Pit no 3, The only map that names the collieries here is from the 1940s and it shows Pit no 2 as being directly opposite this one, on the other side of Birniehill Road, which is now just a farm track, blocked off at its Northern end. Pit no 1 is marked SouthWest of here, on the same road. On the 1960s OS map the mine on this side of the road is first shown.
The colliery was privately owned and, rather strangely, still appears in business listings online. Presumably it was the enterprise of the farmer or landowner here - this would explain why it is still standing. Mining is reported to have stopped in the mid 1970s.
