Old Lime Kiln at Cocklawburn Nature Reserve
This is the Far Skerr Flare Kiln where lime was produced in huge amounts in the 1870's. There were 2 flare kilns built into the cliffs here. As demand increased a battery of 3 kilns was then constructed. These kilns would have been fired continuously and produced lime at an industrial scale. When the lime works were at their zenith in the 1870's, over 190 people lived nearby. Lime production ceased by the 1900's. The kilns were gradually infilled, apparently with the barbed wire that protected the beaches during WWII and then partially removed in the 1980's.
