The Holywood Road, Belfast
The Holywood Road is the nearest thing in Belfast to one of the “Great Arterial Roads” built in the 20’s and 30’s. It runs from the Arches J3674 : The Holywood Arches, Belfast (1) to Knocknagoney. It replaced what is now the Old Holywood Road J3875 : The Old Holywood Road, Belfast and was itself replaced, in 1959, by the Sydenham bypass J3775 : The Sydenham bypass, Belfast (1982). The view is outward with the Station Road J3775 : Station Road, Sydenham on the left at the pelican lights. See also J3674 : The Holywood Road, Belfast (2). The Sydenham bypass, Belfast
Approximately 2˝ miles of dual carriageway forming part of the Belfast – Bangor Road. It runs from the end of the M3 to Tillysburn, parallel to the Belfast – Bangor railway and also serves the George Best Belfast City Airport. It replaced the Holywood Road as the main road to Holywood and Bangor. There are plans for major improvements at the junction with Dee Street.
