SJ2207 : Looking back towards the pavilion

Three rare heritage features in Welshpool are the focus of a new project in 2016 and 2017. We would like you to help us!
Welshpool Motte (Domen Gastell) was built in the twelfth century, and was the first documented Welsh-built castle. The mound and bailey survive to a height of around 6 metres. In the nineteenth century the Crown Green Bowling Club was built in the bailey. On the other side of the motte are the remains of platforms and sidings, built in 1903 to connect the narrow gauge Welshpool and Llanfair Railway with the standard gauge of the main line. This is a rare survival of a mixed-gauge transfer dock, the last surviving example in Wales.
All three features need conservation and repair, and our archaeological project will investigate and record the castle and the transfer dock. This will help us understand more about the evolution of the site, which is in a very prominent location near the roundabout by the railway station.
If you, or someone you know, has memories of the old transfer dock or the Crown Green Bowling Club, then we would be very pleased to hear from you.

They held an open day on 23 September 2016 which included demonstrations by re-enactors, and lots of information displays. These are the photos I took on that day.
