The walled or kitchen garden at Wollaton Hall

The garden was completed in 1788 as a typical walled garden for a large estate. The walled section is a large rhomboid, approximately 125 metres on the side. (It's not clear why it wasn't rectangular as there seems to have been plenty of space to allow that.) There is a central east-west cross wall as well as the perimeter. This central wall, the east wall and the south wall are all built with internal horizontal flues allowing the walls to be heated, assisting the growth of the fruit trees which would have been planted against them.

Such heated walls were relatively uncommon. At Wollaton, the presence of an established coal-mining industry under the control of Lord Middleton provided a ready and low cost supply of fuel.

In the 19th century a row of outbuildings was attached to the north side of the north wall, which also had glasshouses (now demolished) along the south side.

Outside the wall at the north west corner of the garden there was a large separate glasshouse which no longer exists.

After the Wollaton Hall Estate was sold to Nottingham City Council in the 1920s, the walled garden was used as a nursery garden for the City's parks department. This use lasted until 1991, and the garden was allowed to become derelict.

In 2018, the City Council agreed to restoration work commencing. A full restoration was estimated at around £1 million, and pending the ability to raise this amount of money, a great deal of clearance work has been undertaken by volunteers from the Friends of Wollaton Park, and around £20,000 of restoration and consolidation of some of the walls has taken place.

FOWP have created a limited flower and vegetable garden in the northern section, while the southern section is used by a local archery club.
