This riverside tower is known as Cow Tower, probably taking its name from the Anglo-Saxon Cowholme, the water-meadow on which it was built. It is a mediæval artillery tower situated on a bend in the River Wensum. It was built c. 1398/9 to defend the approaches to Norwich overlooking the high ground across the river at the western end of Mousehold Heath.
The tower is c. 48' (14.6 m) high and 36' (11 m) diameter with walls c. 6' (1.8 m) thick at its base and contains three storeys. Its central core consists of stone and flint, but it is faced both externally and internally with red brick. Pierced through the walls are numerous arrow slits and gun-ports.
It is now an English Heritage site managed by Norwich City Council. The interior of the tower is not accessible but may be viewed through a grill across the entrance.
The view here is across the river from the riverside walk.
