SH6113 : Spring operated point

Spring operated point
Spring operated point
Most railway points are operated by a lever, either directly or remotely. However, in some cases it is more expedient to have them spring-operated, as shown here on the Fairbourne Railway passing loop. This allows trains to use the loop without the need for railway staff to operate the point. The spring maintains the point in this default position, which allows trains to take the left-hand line when entering the loop. When trains from the opposite direction are coming off the loop on the right-hand line, the weight of the train vehicles will force the point blades against the spring. The point will reset to the default position once the train wheels have cleared. A similar arrangement exists at the other end of the passing loop.
